Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) / Certified Ophthalmic Technician (COT)


- Fulltime   Position Summary: 
The Certified Ophthalmic Assistant / Certified Ophthalmic Technician will be responsible for conducting technical and administrative patient support activities that assist the professional staff in administering the healthcare and support needed for patients and families in the outpatient neuro-ophthalmic clinic. The COA/COT will be responsible for history taking, tonometry, OCT, Visual Fields, other ancillary testing/diagnostic testing, lensometry, refraction, and other assigned duties. 

Position Requirements: 

Certification: 
  • Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) or Certified Ophthalmic Technician (COT)

Education:  
  • High School Diploma required.  For Certified Ophthalmic Assistant, a 1-year certificate or diploma is required.  For a Certified Ophthalmic Technician, a 2-year associate degree is required.

Experience:  
  •  At least 3 years of experience in a clinical setting preferred.
  •  Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
  • Must have excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Requires effective customer relation skills.
  • Ability to organize and interpret data.
  • Requires good judgment, tact, diplomacy and ability to problem solve.
  • Able to work effectively in a team environment.
  • ust be proficient with computer and related software programs.

Job Responsibilities:
  • History taking
  • Visual acuity measurement
  • Refractometry 
  • Tonometry 
  • Measure pupil size and reactivity
  • Test and measure eye muscle function
  • Visual field testing
  • Color plate assessment
  • Confrontation visual fields
  • Ptosis measurements
  • Retinoscopy as needed
  •  Retinal nerve fiber layer measurement
  •  Retinal thickness and topography
  • Prepare for and assist with in-office procedures
  • Other duties as assigned
