CarePoint Health Endovascular Neurosurgeon Eric Arias, MD, a third-generation Neurosurgeon, has been named a 2024 Top Doctor by 5280 Magazine and Castle Connolly.

Only a small percentage of the 1 million board-certified physicians across the U.S. are honored as Top Doctors each year. Of the more than 200 neurosurgeons in Colorado, only eight were named Top Doctors.

Dr. Arias joins CarePoint Emergency Medicine Physicians Peter Bakes, MD, and Jamie Linker, MD, MBE, as Top Doctor honorees.

5280 and Castle Connolly, a New York-based healthcare research and information company, partner annually to create a list of the top physicians in the country. The digital nomination process allows licensed doctors nationwide to recommend candidates in any medical specialty in any part of the country for the honor. Castle Connolly’s physician-led research team then thoroughly vets each nominated doctor’s professional qualifications, education, hospital and faculty appointments, research leadership, professional reputation, disciplinary history, and, if available, outcomes data. Also considered in the review process are the physician’s interpersonal skills, such as listening and communicating effectively, demonstrating empathy, and instilling trust and confidence.

Dr. Arias comes from a family of Neurosurgeons — his father still practices and his uncle was the first Neurosurgeon in the Dominican Republic. In 2010, a trauma center in the Dominican capital of Santo Domingo was named after his uncle for his many years of service to the country as a public health Neurosurgeon. The Dr. Ney Arias Lora Traumatology Hospital has offered more than 5 million services to patients over the last four years and recently celebrated its 14-year anniversary.

Dr. Arias exemplifies excellence. His unique training and global work, including the care he has provided to children in the Dominican Republic, demonstrate his commitment to making a profound difference in the lives of patients worldwide. He is an inspiration to all of us at CarePoint.

Dr. Arias has visited the Dr. Ney Arias Lora Traumatology Hospital campus on many occasions to perform surgeries on children who suffer from hydrocephalus — a condition in which spinal fluid builds up in the brain, causing increased pressure and head size and sometimes leading to significant disability and even death. With the help of various charities, Dr. Arias and his colleagues have provided care to many of these children, who otherwise would have struggled with the serious condition for the rest of their lives.

“Dr. Arias exemplifies excellence,” CarePoint CEO Mark Kozlowski, MD, said. “His unique training and global work, including the care he has provided to children in the Dominican Republic, demonstrate his commitment to making a profound difference in the lives of patients worldwide. He is an inspiration to all of us at CarePoint.”

Dr. Arias is trained in both neurosurgery and endovascular neuroradiology; the vast majority of surgeons are trained in one or the other. His dual-training enables him to provide an unbiased, comprehensive perspective and offer both open surgical and minimally invasive endovascular treatment options for conditions such as aneurysms, arteriovenous malformations, carotid stenosis, moyamoa disease, and strokes.

Dr. Arias graduated from the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons and completed his residency training at the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis. He went on to complete his fellowship training at Washington University’s Mallinckrodt Institute of Radiology. He has also contributed to dozens of articles published in peer-reviewed journals.
